Western Technical Institute (WTI) started operation on January 1, 1970 and since that time has expanded in size and enrollment. Starting with a basic welding curriculum, new courses have been added periodically. Refrigeration and Air Conditioning was added in 1971, Automotive in 1975, Electronics in 1980, Microprocessor/ Microcomputer training in 1983, Medical Assisting in 1984, Health Information Technology in 1994, and Massage Therapy and Information Technology careers in 2001. Upon expert advice from employer advisory boards, the courses and programs at WTI are constantly updated to conform to industry standards.

In January of 1979, WTI was initially accredited by the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology, which is listed by the U.S. Office of Education as a nationally-recognized accrediting agency under the provisions of Chapter 33, Title 38, U.S. Code, and subsequent legislation.
