Analysis

Overthe years there have been numerous arguments and counterarguments onhow the media affects the society. The exposure, especially youngchildren, and teenagers to media violence has been an importantsubject of discussion and research. Multiple studies have concludedthat media violence is a major factor that has contributed toincreased incidences of aggressive behaviors in the society (Fikkerset al., 2013). The article by Fikkers et al. (2013) reports theresults of an investigation into the effects media violence (andother conflicts in the society) and how it is associated withsubsequent violent behaviors in adolescents. The hypothesis of thestudy was that exposure to media violence in teenagers from familieswith a higher number of conflict incidences are likely to have higherlevels of aggression (Fikkers et al., 2013).

Thestudy method involved two longitudinal surveys with an interval offour months. It included 499 children aged between 10 and fourteenyears from both genders. The questionnaires aimed at assessing thelevel of exposure to media violence in TV and video games.Additionally, incidences of family conflicts and were also appraisedduring the survey. In both waves of the evaluation, aggressivebehaviors in each of the child were recorded. Several direct andindirect measures were used in each of the variables (Fikkers et al.,2013).

Thestudy established that the media has an enormous influence on thedevelopment of violent behaviors in children and adolescents. However, a significant interaction between exposure to familyconflicts and media violence was revealed. Adolescent who are moreaggressive had higher exposure to both factors. This is a double doseeffect, which emphasizes the role of family and external influence insocial development (Fikkers et al., 2013).
