DNAprofile is among the key types of technologies that are used tofacilitate investigation and collection evidence that can be used incourt. The criminal justice system uses the DNA results in threeways, including the resolution of cases, identification of victims aswell as perpetrators of offenses, and the establishment of the linkbetween two incidents of law breaking (DNA Diagnostics Center, 2016).Currently, it is estimated that the most efficient labs can providethe results of the DNA process in 1-2 days while others take about4-6 weeks (DDC, 2016). The long time that it takes for forensic labsto process DNA increases inefficiency that limit the application ofthis technology in the judicial system.

DNAprofile is done on the biological samples that are collected fromcrime scenes. Law enforcers determine samples that should be taken tothe lab. The PCR technique is used to conduct the analysis andproduce the DNA profile. The instruments used in most labs processone sample at a time (Soheyl, Gupta, Kaur, Aggarwal, Sigh &ampGupta, 2012). The delay in DNA process can be attributed to slowelectrophoresis instruments and a requirement that the technology canonly be used by experts.

Futureof DNA Process

Researchersintend to reduce the amount of time taken to produce the DNA profileand the need to rely on experts. In the future, it is projected thatDNA profile will be obtained in less than two hours. In addition,instruments used in forensic labs will be able to process over 96samples at a time (Illumina, Inc, 2016). Moreover, researchers areworking towards the production of portable labs that can be taken tothe scenes of crime.
