It shall also highlight the approaches that aretaken in other cultures to draw in the differences in order to showhow they have been effective at dealing with the problem intofruition.

Ina view to the address the social problem, the paper will choose tofocus on the theme of child rearing. Most parents go through theproblem of ensuring that their children receive the best level ofcare and are able to be resourceful members of the society in future(Lee,1993).As such, they are taken a step back when they realize that it isdifficult for them to make decisions on whether they should moreinvolved in the lives of their children through making choices forthem or if they need to leave them alone so that they could beautonomous and in a position to make decisions for themselves andsuffer from the flaws that they may have alone. This is one of theproblems that Dorothy Lee aims to address through the application ofa comparative approach to highlight it and come up with worthwhilerecommendations.

Assuch, she indicates that one of the limitations that are experiencedin the western culture as it concerns taking care of children lies inhaving vocabularies that imply that the parent has some form ofimperial leadership to the child. The parents feel that they are theones taking care of the child and it is, therefore, their duty toensure that the young ones take actions that are in line with theirexpectations (Lee,1993).While the motives of the parents are normally good, the approachtaken is usually wrong. This is because children are also humanbeings who seek for their own autonomy. They also feel that they haveright to make decisions that regard their lives and take actions thatthey believe will either be good for them or make them feel good. Incases, where the parent detaches himself from the child, the onemessage that he sends is that he is the one in control and the childneeds to follow rules without raising any questions. Such an actionis usually less effective, and in the least, it draws some form ofrebellion on the part of children.

Assuch, Lee brings in the culture practiced by Wintu Indians as theybring up children. They hold the view that children are able to takebetter actions when they are made to feel that they are part of it orthey took part in making a given decision. As a result, these peoplehave adopted some form of cooperative rearing whereby they engage thechildren more intently in their daily activities. They also put a lotof focus on using vocabularies that point out that their children arepartners in a given activity (Lee,1993).One of the ways that could be used to illustrate such could be in theway that they would report a given event. For instance, they wouldsay, ‘I went with my child to the mall,` instead of saying that, ‘Itook my child to the mall.’ The first statement points out thatboth of them made efforts towards going to the mall and it was aconcern for both. As a result, a child will have a high need ofresponsibility to take proper actions that would be beneficial tohim. He will also have the higher need to make actions that are incoherence with the general societal expectations. As a result, such apractice will help to ensure that they easily follow rules and arehighly dependable.

TheWintu people do hold the view that the aspect of proper childdevelopment lies in the ability of the parent to use vocabulary thatcould influence the child to show a high level of integrity in hislife. Such an action is normally well enhanced when the parentremains consistent with expectations and modifies the way he talks sothat he could be of good influence to the child.

Inconclusion, Lee has been quite effective in showing that it ispossible for parents to take actions that will ensure that childrenstand to gain in a major way (Lee,1993).She proposes that the issue of change of vocabulary among parentsneeds to be continuous and systematic. As a result, children are ableto take notice of the parent in maintaining a certain standard andwill take the aim of achieving such. The parents will also lesslikely confuse the children as their actions will be highlyconsistent showing that it is the general style of living. Continuouspractice is also quite essential in enabling parents be good at sucha practice and ensure that they have high levels of success in takingcare of their children and being of good influence to them.
