Purposeand role of the USDA for ensuring the safety of our food supply

TheUSDA plays a broad range of functions including, the provision ofleadership on natural resources, food, agriculture, nutrition, ruraldevelopment among others[ CITATION Ter15 l 1033 ].In ensuring the food supply safety, the department protects theconsumer from the risks of peril substances and pathogens. It hasimplemented policies such as the test and hold that prevent therecall of harmful foods. TheFood Safety Modernization Act (FSMA)

TheFSMA is a constitutional reform signed into law on the 4th of April2011, by President Obama[ CITATION Ter15 l 1033 ].The core purpose of the law is to ensure food supply safety byemploying prevention measures, rather than responding to a contagion.The FSMA emerged from the increased outbreaks of foodborne ailmentsand the experienced waves of bioterrorist attacks. The law hasvarious provisions designed to improve food security in the U.S[ CITATION Alm14 l 1033 ].

Whatagency has oversight of the FSMA?

TheFood and Drug Administration (FDA) has been tasked with theimplementation and monitoring task of the FSMA. Under the new law,the FDA is mandated to establish guidelines for the contemporary foodsecurity prevention measures for the key stakeholders of the foodindustry. The ideas stipulated under the new law ensure the FDAundertakes its oversight, assurance, and safety techniques in anefficient manner.
